I get asked this question all the time, and honestly, I don’t really know. I guess I am one of those people that I don’t know what I am talking about when I ask the question. I’ve had people ask me if I can get “off the couch” so I can get some work done and not have to sit there all day, and I’ve heard, “get your butt to work”.

My response is usually something along the lines of, no, because it is a very busy day. But if you are still interested, it’s a great question. I think the most common answer I get is something along the lines of, “I’m just going to sit here with my laptop and work for ten minutes and then I can come back to this conversation.

Yes, I can repeat that please. I have a ton of work to do today. I had to come in a few hours ago, so I need to get it done.

This is a bit of a problem. People can’t get the work done that they need to to get their jobs done. This is because our work is so highly variable that some bosses won’t let us work until we get it right. A lot of that is probably due to our work ethic, but it often also comes down to how much pressure we put on ourselves.

I know we can all agree that we are only as good as our work. But I also agree that it can take a lot of pressure off our work. I know I work an extremely long hours. My work ethic is pretty high. But I also have a wife, a dog, and a cat that need me to get a certain amount of sleep, and I put a lot of time and effort into that.

A lot of people who are very lucky, or have luck, work so hard that they get to go back and do the same thing over and over again. But when they get back to their work, they can become the most active people on the planet.

It’s certainly true that there are times when we don’t feel like our work is “our work.” We all know people who live with their heads in the sand and think they aren’t doing anything. We are not all going to have that exact circumstance, but we can all identify with a lack of motivation. In our experience, many of our best work is when we feel like we’re doing work we enjoy. This is true for both employees and employers.

I have a friend who was a teacher for a while and he would always say he was a terrible teacher. Some of the students were so bad that they would not learn anything in an entire semester. He would sit back and not notice or care that the kid was even doing that. Then one time he met a student who was really good. He was so proud of her that he decided to give her a raise. Needless to say, that student took her job less seriously than he did.

This is a common scenario in the corporate world. Employees need to be challenged on the job or they get bored and frustrated. Employers can often do the same thing. To be fair, I often think this is a result of employers having an average worker. They are likely to be average to slightly above average in general, but they are not average in the sense that these employees are average in skill or abilities.
