The opening of the embassy in New Delhi was a wonderful event for India and Pakistan. We had a wonderful time. It was also a good opportunity to remind people that no matter what happens, we are all better off because of the presence of the United States.
One really nice feature of the embassy in New Delhi was the location of the embassy, something we don’t usually have, but a couple of the Embassy officials that we knew didn’t really know much about India. After we visited the embassy in Chennai, we realized that the embassy was just a place where the Indian government is supposed to be.
I think the point of this post is that you really ought to have a sense of the country you are in. This is especially true if you are a tourist. But even more so if you happen to be a diplomat. I think many diplomats are really bad at this sort of thing. Because they come from the countries they are supposed to be in, they can make mistakes when interacting with the people they should be serving.
This is a topic that often comes up in the comments of our articles, so I wanted to touch on it a bit further. I think that we are all very fortunate to live in countries where people are as friendly and welcoming as we are to people from the other countries we are in. But as we all know, it is easy to forget that this is a country. It is a country that has a way of doing things.
