As a little girl, my parents did what they thought was necessary to protect me from being a girl. They had me get my nails and ear piercings removed and cut off, and they had me put on a pink ribbon when I was a girl, just to make me feel more special than I already was. I was never able to enjoy the piercings because of the pink ribbon.

I think there is a lot of shame attached to this sort of “piercings as a girl” behavior. My parents were just being protective. We are girls. We are girls who think that if we’re not wearing a dress, we should be wearing pink. It’s not that I don’t know how to dress or that I don’t like pink, but I was always really, really embarrassed to wear pink. I didn’t feel comfortable about my body.

I could understand the pink ribbon being a pain, but I think there is also a reason that piercings are generally associated with girls. Its just not something that is often done by boys and I think its because girls are more ashamed of what they do. But just because I feel ashamed about piercings, it doesn’t mean I want them to be a thing. I think its about being able to show them off.

Some people might think our piercings look a bit weird, but I think they look good. It’s just that I’ve always thought I needed more piercings. I used to love them, but now I dont really care anymore. I dont have the problem with piercings in general anymore, but as I’ve grown I have become aware that they are a bit of a turn off. Like, I feel like I’m being forced to wear them.
