I’ve had Sam so excited to do a post for me today that she just started typing and it started playing audio. She was listening to “The Three Levels of Self-Awareness,” by David Bohm, and I think this is her take on the concept.

Well, yes, that’s true! But for the wrong reason. Like most of that book’s ideas, it seems to be a little too simplistic and far-fetched. As someone who’s been trying to understand it for some time now, I agree that the general idea is quite interesting. But there are so many aspects of it that I just can’t get my head around. For instance, I don’t understand how the self-awareness concept applies in all situations.

Well, Bohm gives a great example of how our experiences and memories can affect the way that we perceive the world around us. And I think you will agree that if a person who had been a brain-damaged quadriplegic for years before developing the ability to move around freely, suddenly becomes aware that she is on a time-loop, then it becomes extremely unlikely that she would simply continue to wander around as she had always done.

My point with this is that these instances of self-awareness are extremely rare. On the other hand, people who are blind or completely dependent on others for survival tend to live in a constant state of danger.

It’s not that we lack self-awareness. We just don’t have the resources to know how to work with it.

As the saying goes, it’s a matter of degree. Self-awareness comes in degrees, or phases. For one person with self-awareness, it would be a matter of getting up every morning and taking a shower, then sitting down in front of a mirror, putting on a nice dress, and seeing that it looks fine. For another, it would be a matter of getting up in the morning, getting dressed, putting on makeup, getting a haircut, and seeing that it looks fine.

Some people would say that self-awareness is a matter of becoming aware of certain habits, routines, impulses, and reactions. I think that to be self-aware is to be aware of what you do and why. It’s not to learn to control what you do. It’s to decide to do it, and to learn when to stop.

If you’re really self-aware, you’re aware of what goes on in your brain. You know what you’re doing, and what you’re doing is not necessarily malicious. Self-awareness (or self-awareness as the psychologists would call it) is being aware that you are doing something wrong. If you know you are harming yourself, it’s no wonder that you’re not doing anything about it.

Self-awareness is not synonymous with self-control. Self-awareness is about being aware of what you are doing, and then deciding to do something about it. Self-awareness is something that we all have in common. We all make mistakes, and we all make poor decisions. Self-awareness is the ability to acknowledge your own failures, be able to admit you made mistakes, and take steps to fix them. If you don’t self-awareness, you are unlikely to change your mistakes.

In the new Samantha Fenty video, we see Sam as being aware of her actions, and realizing her mistakes. We see her self-awareness in the scene where she has a conversation with a friend about why she has just shot someone. She thinks she is a bad person for even having such a conversation, and is trying to be honest with her friend.
