As the popularity of cryptocurrency increases, it’s becoming more and more common for movies to explore the many facets of a crypto business. In this list, we’ve compiled a few of our favorite film recommendations that are based in some form on crypto igaming life.

1) The Big Short

Director: Adam McKay

A 2005 comedy about the housing crash in the United States. It follows four men who take out loans and short securities when they discover one thing: an unsustainable global economy is sagging because of these mortgages that aren’t being paid back. This movie does an excellent job showing how fraud can lead to disaster and how greed is leading most people into making enormous mistakes in their investing efforts by not taking a look at fundamentals. Narrated by a bankruptcy attorney, the film depicts the true actors and what they did to influence the markets. This movie is also a great place to see an accurate accounting of the three-act structure of a movie. 

2) The Hunger Games

Director: Gary Ross

A 2012 science fiction book adaptation that’s set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future world where teenage children save themselves and their country by competing against one another in televised gladiatorial games called “The Hunger Games”. The film follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) on her journey as she tries to protect her sister and also tries to find out why her father has been taken away from her. A series of events leads to her being forced to participate in the games, which she isn’t happy about. She is able to prove herself as a true fighter and earn her place in the end as an ambassador of peace who tries to bring change and show that there can be another way. 3) The Wolf of Wall Street

Director: Martin Scorsese

This 2013 movie is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, an investment banker during the 1980s who became wealthy. He was able to provide his clients with questionable advice such as recommending stocks that he knew were overvalued by investing capital into them as a form of ponzi scheme. He also took advantage of other people’s money to buy every luxury he could get his hands on, which was grossly inflated in price due to the demand for his service. This movie showcases how greed and corruption can lead to disaster for investors and a firm connected to him goes bankrupt on several occasions. The movie then follows Belfort himself after he realizes that he has been taking advantage of a system and getting away with it for his entire life. He decides to change his ways and starts cooperating with the law in order to be treated fairly instead of being thrown in jail. 4) The Princess Bride

Director: Rob Reiner

A 1987 comedy-drama set in the Renaissance era about a farm boy who falls in love with the lady of his dreams and must rescue her from an evil prince. The boy ends up being kidnapped and has to clear his name when he is accused of kidnapping his lady love. He goes on a journey to find her, then gets captured and taken hostage by a criminal mastermind. He decides it’s best to flee instead of fight. Fans will enjoy this film because it’s based on a book that was written in 1973, although the filmmakers took liberties by changing the ending slightly.

5) The Social Network

Director: David Fincher

This 2010 film tells the true story about the origin of Facebook , the website for social networking. A brash college student ends up creating a website that allows people to connect and make friends online; it quickly gains popularity and allows anyone with a computer to access it. The website starts gaining popularity at Harvard when Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is able to create an application called “Facemash” that allows students to vote on who’s hot and who isn’t. This takes off, but eventually gets him into trouble with Harvard when they don’t approve of his idea. Zuckerberg later creates “The Facebook” for NFT, which becomes the most popular social network. He then finds out that some people are trying to take his idea and steal it to make a profit, so he has to fight back and make sure that he’s not going to lose everything he’s worked for. This film shows the importance of choosing who you want to be as a business owner and staying true to yourself, even when fortune is on your side. It also shows the steps needed in founding a business, from choosing a name for the company down to launching it into the world for others to use. Sometimes you have to dig deep in order to find what you’re looking for.
