Heavy rain in Coimbatore today. A few more showers are in the forecast.
Coimbatore has been in the news a lot lately with the recent riots that broke out between the two districts of Coimbatore (near to Mysore) and Vellore (near to Bangalore), and now it looks like the rains will be a part of those riots as well.
As you may or may not have heard, the violence between the two districts of Coimbatore has been pretty much non-stop since they began. The recent riots in Coimbatore happened in the early hours of the morning on Monday, the first day of the rains.
The violent riots were a combination of the two districts’ respective power struggles, but they were also a result of a political spat between their respective chief ministers who had been fighting it out for the last couple of months. The riots are expected to end up creating a complete mess in the district as well, as both Chief Minister V.K. Shri and CM B. Ramalinga Raju are expected to resign immediately after the riots end.
Not the first time we’ve seen the power struggle between a chief minister and his deputy who have been at loggerheads for more than a couple of months, but this is sure to be among the most serious. We’ll be hearing more about it on Thursday when the two chief ministers meet one another.
While the riots are expected to be over, there is no telling what sort of chaos the political turmoil will create. We know that the political parties are on the verge of splitting up, but the question is whether the riots would have an effect on the parties more than they already are. I’m not saying that the riots will be the most disastrous thing to happen to the political parties, but I do think that the riots will have a major effect on politics in the city.
The violence in Coimbatore is so widespread and rampant that even the government has begun to come under pressure from the media to step in. All of the political parties have been affected by the situation, and the government has even issued a notification to the public that it is going to step in and deal with the riots. The government is also looking to increase the number of people who can register for the upcoming elections.
