This post is in response to an article that appeared on the Huffington Post about how people tend to overestimate the number of days until a new year.
Yes, we tend to over-estimate how long it takes to get to one year. It’s a fact of life.
There is a lot of pressure to get a new year started on a big note. We want to make a big impression, feel as if we accomplished something worthwhile, or at the very least are getting a fresh start. Over-estimating how long it takes to get to a new year, however, is another way of saying that we are doing this on purpose, and that there is nothing wrong with that.
Well, yeah, there is. We all have a reason to get a new year started, and there are times when we can over-estimate how long it will take us to get there. But we can also come to realize that any number of factors are taking our time, and for the most part we let ourselves get caught up in that. I used to be a huge New Years Resolutions kind of person.
There are lots of things that can change your New Year’s resolution, and getting a new one is no different. In fact, I’m pretty sure that most of us were on the same old thing. But when a new year came around, I was a little less committed to it. I was still trying to make the most of whatever time I had left. To the point where my goals had gotten a little more ambitious than they needed to be.
Now, however, I’m a little more focused than I was on the first few New Years resolutions. I’m a little more aware of what I can accomplish in the coming weeks and months, and what I have to work toward. My current resolutions are, of course, to work out my health and fitness, and also to get back to a more physical, active, and adventurous lifestyle.
That’s the thing. If you have a health and fitness plan or a health and fitness goal you want to work toward, you need to set a goal. You need to set a number of days or weeks you are willing to commit to. Once you set that number, you need to be willing to let it change, and to give yourself a chance if something is still not working.
I’m going to tell you a story about setting a goal. Today I decided to go to a yoga class. I am a yoga nerd (I am also a big fan of the “yoga warrior” image) and I have a routine where I have to go to yoga class every morning. The last time I went to a yoga class was two years ago, and I think I had to give myself 2 weeks to get out of bed.
The thing is, many people don’t know that you can’t change your routine. The thing is, you can’t change your routine. You can set a goal, but you need to be willing to let it take a shift. If you don’t let that shift happen, it will never happen.
Like I said, many people dont know that you cant change your routine. Some people are afraid of change and want to force it on themselves. They want to be able to do something that they are not capable of doing themselves. These people do yoga, but they don’t want to be able to do yoga. It’s a really simple concept though. Letting yourself be different is not difficult, and it really is liberating. In fact, it’s like a vacation from the daily grind.
